SOMEBODY ELSE by WD Picou Somebody else sleeps on your pillow Somebody else turns out the light Somebody else to see in dreamland Somebody else all through the night All through the night All through the night Once I saw my picture There up on your shelf Now I see you've put the frame Around somebody else Somebody else Somebody else Somebody else pulls on the covers Somebody else to call your name Somebody else to light your candle Somebody else to burn the flame Burn the flame Burn the flame Once I saw my name In a book up on your shelf Now between the covers You write somebody else Somebody else Somebody else Somebody else to keep a secret Somebody else to hold you tight Somebody else to see in dreamland Somebody else all through the night Memories and souvenirs Sit up on your shelf Now I see you've filled my space With somebody else Somebody else Somebody else © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

Loaded Gun 02:16
LOADED GUN by WD Picou Well my aim is high, I shoot straight from the heart I just try again if I miss my mark With every step I take you know I take a chance But I won't waste my love, I won't kill romance Why, why, why does everybody run? I think they think my love is a loaded gun Love's got people falling left and right In the middle of the day, in the heat of the night Neath the rays of the sun and the light of the moon I've seen people hit while hiding in a room Why, why, why does everybody run? I think they think my love is a loaded gun There's lots of walking wounded from the point of Cupid's dart Some got holes in their head, some got holes in their heart With caution to the wind walk unafraid You know I wouldn't hurt you, why do you turn away Why, why, why does everybody run? I think they think my love is a loaded gun © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

WHISTLING WIND by WD Picou The whistling wind brings a message to me It whispers the words as it winds around me I hear music everywhere even when there's no one there Singing sounds come to me I hear voice in harmony The tropical breeze sings a topical tune The dry desert air draws me into a room I hear music in the air Bringing stories from somewhere Whether storm or gentle breeze I hear voice in harmony I hear the song that you're singing to me I linger on the lines of your sweet melody I hear music all around in every noise and every sound And even then you talk to me I hear voice in harmony I hear music in the air Bringing stories from somewhere Whether storm or gentle breeze I hear voice in harmony © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

Fireworks 03:11
FIREWORKS by WD Picou I listen to the fireworks on Independence Day It sounds like gunfire from far away I think of Belfast and El Salvador Those people live an everyday war Mothers with groceries and soldiers with guns Share the same sidewalk for a walk in the sun A walk in the sun See all the action on the nightly news Body bags, body counts, Death in review You don't know why they're fighting but you still pick a side as you watch from the sidelines and cheer for your side Children with slingshots and soldiers with guns Fight for the sidewalk and a place in the sun A place in the sun Somewhere a soldier kills a young girl the satellite brings the shot round the world I hear the gunfire from far away It sounds like fireworks on Independence Day With weapons of rubber and plastic and glass They fight for the sidewalk and they'll fight for the last place in the sun Place in the sun © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

Talk 02:32
TALK by WD Picou Taking potshots Without an aim Gunslinging is such a dangerous game Too little to do Too much time Talk, talk, talk Is such a dangerous crime Talk is cheap Talk is free You get drafted To the hall of infamy Tell me, darling, What's on your mind There must be a reason For all your prying Pointing your finger But I don't know why Look into the mirror You've got dirt in your eye Talk is cheap Talk is free You get drafted To the hall of infamy Freelancers With their poison pens And their sharp tongues And their noses for sin They back stab Just in self defense Then they brag about their innocence © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

DEAD END STREET by WD Picou I watched cars go in and not come back The signs were fake it was a trap And now they’re lost with no escape They can’t turn around cause they’re driving straight Down a one way Dead end street It’s just a one way Dead end street yeah Cars of people so polite No honking horns no flashing lights Follow the leader one by one Nobody really knows which way they’re going Down a one way dead end street It’s just a one way Dead end street © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

Charlie 04:34
CHARLIE by WD Picou I think I hear footsteps, Charlie They must be coming here I feel the ground is trembling They must be getting near I can't hear what they're saying now They keep their voices low This part's really scary I can't take it anymore We left home so long ago We traveled so far The flowers smell familiar but I don't know where we are I think I hear a bugle, Charlie Playing on the shore I don't know what it means exactly But I've heard that tune before It has such a lonely sound I feel so sad and blue I wish we could get out of here I wish that we could move We left home so long ago We traveled so far The flowers smell familiar but I don't know where we are Someone's right above me, Charlie They know I'm hiding here I thought I felt a raindrop, Charlie Salty as a tear How long have we been underground Have we ever seen the light I'd like to send a message home But I don't know what to write We left home so long ago We traveled so far The flowers smell familiar but I don't know where we are © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

What I Know 03:02
WHAT I KNOW by WD Picou Sometimes it feels like I know too much I have heard that ignorance is bliss It all started out with an innocent touch led right up to a passionate kiss Sometimes I wish I didn't love her I wish I didn't know what I know I wish I didn't love her I wish I could let it all go I fell in live I committed the crime I plead guilty in the first degree I can't get back to innocent times So go ahead and judge and sentence me Sometimes I wish I didn't love her I wish I didn't know what I know I wish I didn't love her I wish I could let it all go Right now it feels like my heart's on fire it keeps on burning like a white-hot coal I get so overcome with desire that I begin to feel like I'm losing control Sometimes I wish I didn't love her I wish I didn't know what I know I wish I didn't love her I wish I could let it all go © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

La Ti Da 03:18
LA TI DA by WD Picou I slipped into a discotheque The room was full, the air was thick The place was filled with dancing fools Mask and costume were the rule CHORUS: Singers singing La la la ti da Dancers dancing La la la ti da The singers say The song don't mean a thing I went into an uptown bar Where no one cares just who you are All it takes is one good look To classify you in their book CHORUS I went to a country club Where there they dance the elbow rub They add a twist to shimmy-shake And talk about the great escape CHORUS: Music playing La la la ti da Dancers swaying La la la ti da The singers say The song don't mean a thing © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

Borderline 03:48
BORDERLINE by WD Picou She looks out through the bedroom window Bitterness etched upon her face Unhappy with her lot in life Unhappy with her dreadful place She hopes her prince will come and they'll ride in the setting sun The setting sun Waiting for her prince to come Yet, there she sits her dreams all colored in wine She vows to leave, tonight she'll cross The bored, bored, bored Borderline Oh, Sleeping Beauty, Oh, Cinderella Hold your life in your own hands Don't wait up for the perfect stranger Don't give in to Superman Her prince may come tonight But that won't promise a Perfect Life The Perfect Life She's waiting for a Perfect Life Yet, there she sits her dreams all colored in wine She vows to leave, tonight she'll cross The bored, bored, bored Borderline I see her through the bedroom window I beckon her to come outside She sees me but turns away Cause disappointments rule her life She hopes her prince will come And they'll ride in the setting sun The setting sun She's waiting for her prince to come Yet, there she sits her dreams all colored in wine She vows to leave, tonight she'll cross The bored, bored, bored Borderline © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

ALLONS DANSER by WD Picou It's late at night and our sorrows are drowned All is quiet round the old hometown The lines that form in the morning light Are out of mind Now that they're out of sight Worries are forgotten Trouble's all gone Let's put off till tomorrow While the band plays on CHORUS: Allons danser allons danser Yippee yippee ti yo Yippee yippee ti yay Looking at the world through eyes of glass Laughing at the world While it all goes past Now the drawn curtain hides the pouring rain and the child's face pressed against the window pane The dancers spin round the middle of the floor They close their eyes As the band plays more CHORUS It's late at night sorrows are drowned All is quiet Round the old hometown Them safe behind their castle walls Thinking safe from the fate that awaits us all Them looking at the world through eyes of glass Them laughing at the world as it all goes past But now the drawn curtains hide the pouring rain And the child's face pressed against the window pane The lines that form in the morning light Are out of mind Now that they're out of sight Worries are forgotten Trouble's all gone Let's put off till tomorrow While the band plays on CHORUS © Half-Nutt Music, All Rights Reserved

about

Bas Clas relocated from Lafayette, Louisiana, to Atlanta in August 1986 when the state was reeling from a collapse of the oil economy and jobs of all kinds were hard to find. Atlanta beckoned, and tens of thousands migrated from the bayou state.

The band was welcomed to the Atlanta music scene by the management of the 688 Club, thanks to Louisiana native Cathy Hendrix, who went above and beyond to help Bas Clas transition to the city.

On Wednesday, February 3, 1988, the Cotton Club hosted a 688 Records release party for Arms Akimbo. Bas Clas opened the show. The set was recorded to cassette from the house mixing console and fades in during the opening song, Somebody Else. The songs are presented in order.

The band's sound engineer was Todd Houseknecht, a talented mixer and electronics whiz. Thanks to Todd, this live recording is one of the best in the Bas Clas library. This show features the only known live versions of the songs Charlie and Borderline, both of which are yet to be fully captured in a studio session.

A brief drop in sound quality at the start of Fireworks is due to the tape being among a box of recordings subjected to nearly two weeks of floodwaters from Hurricane Katrina, which also destroyed most of the band's photos, archives, and Steve Picou’s instruments. Side one of the cassette ran out late in Allons Danser. Fortunately, Todd flipped the tape in time to catch the finale, Serfin’ USA, the band’s signature closer.

These tracks feature drummer David Baker, a native of North Carolina who joined Bas Clas in 1987 and worked (and lived) with the band until their final Atlanta shows in the late spring of 1991.

This release showcases a well-rehearsed, tight band in top shape, made easy by an in-house rehearsal space that provided daily access to practice and recording sessions. Within a few months of this show, Bas Clas signed a contract with John Scher’s Metropolitan Entertainment and manager Rob Kos. The deal resulted in another set of stories and recordings we’ll share in a future release.
